Qatar hammer hosts UAE before hostile crowd

ABU DHABI • Qatar, 2022 World Cup hosts, cruised into Friday's Asian Cup final against Japan in style, still yet to concede in six matches after a 4-0 rout of hosts United Arab Emirates yesterday.
The opener came on 22 minutes when goalkeeper Khalid Eisa let a seemingly harmless Boualem Khoukhi shot from the edge of the box sneak under his hands.
Almoez Ali doubled the lead on 37 minutes with his eighth goal of the tournament, a curler into the bottom corner that equalled the record by Iranian legend Ali Daei in 1996.
In the 81st minute, Hassan Al-Haydos broke away and dinked the ball over the goalkeeper.
Then UAE's Ismail Ahmed was sent off for an off-the-ball elbow after Mexican referee Cesar Ramos reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor.
Hamid Ismail completed the rout three minutes into stoppage time in a two-on-three counter.
The clash at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium was played under a cloud of political dispute in the Gulf. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt have imposed a diplomatic, trade and transport boycott of Qatar since June 2017 over allegations Doha supports terrorism, a charge Qatar denies.
Qatar faced a hostile crowd at the sold-out 43,000-seat stadium in Abu Dhabi, where the emirate's sport authority offered free tickets to UAE fans.
Qatari nationals, who previously travelled freely in the Gulf, cannot enter the UAE unless they receive a special permit. But the team have had support from some Omanis, whose country has taken a neutral stand in the row.

Japan beat Iran 3-0 on Monday and are now seeking their fifth title, while Iran coach Carlos Queiroz has said he was standing down after nearly eight years.
The former Real Madrid coach had been hoping to deliver Iran's first continental title since 1976 but Japan scored three second-half goals to send them crashing out.
"I think the simplest thing to do is to copy the famous song: 'And now, the end is here'," the 65-year-old Portuguese said, misquoting the famous Frank Sinatra song, My Way.
"I'm very happy and very proud because I did it my way.
"A huge, huge thank you to my players for everything. Taking into account the difficulties... They are going to be in my heart for the rest of my life."
Queiroz, who has been linked with Colombia, took Iran to the World Cup Finals twice, earning one win in six matches.

Qatar not the favourites, says coach Sanchez

ABU DHABI • Qatar beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 on Thursday to finish top of Group E in an Asian Cup match that garnered more attention for geopolitics than sporting rivalry.
The derby clash was the first time the two sides had met since a bitter political dispute began between the Gulf Arab states 18 months ago.
Saudi Arabia, joined by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain, cut ties with Qatar in June 2017 over allegations it supports terrorism, a charge Doha denies.
Forward Almoez Ali's brace was enough to see off the Green Falcons in front of an almost entirely pro-Saudi 16,067-strong crowd in Abu Dhabi.
Qatar now face 2007 Asian Cup champions Iraq in the knockout stage. Saudi Arabia, group runners-up, meet 2011 champions Japan.
"Every game is going to be hard," Qatar head coach Felix Sanchez told reporters. "We don't consider ourselves favourites."
Saudi Arabia coach Juan Pizzi criticised his team's poor performance in front of goal and said individual errors cost them a game in which they controlled possession. Forward Fahad Al-Muwallad could have opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he beat the goalkeeper but was denied by the post.

Qatar had a goal disallowed in a contentious decision in the 59th minute. The video assistant referee (VAR) system being introduced in the knockout stages could not have come sooner.
Despite the political context, the match was mostly played in good spirit with the players appearing to be extra polite after committing fouls in the early stages.
But at the end Saudi forward Mohammed Alsaiari was seen pushing some of the celebrating Qataris, gesturing for them to leave the pitch.
Pizzi declined to comment on the incident, telling reporters it had "nothing to do with football".
The top two of each of the six four-team groups plus the best four third-placed teams advance to the last 16.
Bahrain, Kyrgyzstan, Oman and Vietnam have scraped through to join Jordan, Thailand, China, Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Uzbekistan, UAE, South Korea, Qatar and Iraq in the next stage.

Football: Klopp excited by Premier League title fight

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League title race is something to get excited about rather than stressed about despite seeing his side overhauled by Manchester City in the past week.
City climbed to the top of the table on goal difference with victory against Everton in midweek but Liverpool's destiny remains in their own hands as they have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola's men, with both sides level on 62 points.
"It's getting exciting now," said Klopp on Friday (Feb 8).
"There was never a doubt that would happen. That was always clear. I don't think that anybody thought we would be top of the league with 12 points between us and another team with three games to go.
"The only chance to improve our position, even though it is a good position, is by winning football games."
Just over a week ago, Liverpool had the chance to move seven points clear at the top, but back-to-back draws with Leicester and West Ham on Monday have seen them reeled in by the champions.
Liverpool players and fans have been accused of letting nerves get to them in their desperation to end a 29-year wait to win the title.

And Klopp called on the home fans to make Anfield a cauldron when Bournemouth visit on Saturday.
"It's like shouting your soul on the pitch. That's how we say it in German," added Klopp.
"I know that with each fibre of our bodies we will be ready to fight for everything.
"The only thing I want to say after the season is we gave our everything."
There was good news for Liverpool off the field on Friday as the club announced a world-record £106 million (S$140 million) net profit last year thanks to the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and a run to the Champions League final.
Much of that profit has already been reinvested in the signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp is hoping he does not need to ask for a lot more money this summer.
"We built a really strong squad and that's a squad built for the future, not only this season," added the German.
"I hope we don't need too much money in the next years to be honest because if you have the right players in, you work with them and make the best of it."
Klopp's squad has been ravaged by injury and illness in recent weeks but he could have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum back for Bournemouth's visit after all three returned to training on Thursday.

LONDON • Fulham were the perfect opponents for a team hoping not to expend unnecessary energy before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United did not have to be at their dashing best yesterday to continue their resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but they still could have scored a hatful as they regained a spot in the top four of the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
They settled for a 3-0 win in the end and Solskjaer was able to keep Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard on the bench before United welcome PSG to Old Trafford for the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday night.
A brace from Paul Pogba and a sensational solo goal from Anthony Martial were enough for the Premier League's form side, who have picked up 25 points from nine games since replacing Jose Mourinho with Solskjaer in December.
Pogba later fired a warning to the chasing pack that they intend "to stay there", adding: "It feels great. That's what we wanted, since Ole came, the top four.
"We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team.

EYES ON THE PRIZE
We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team. When we need three points, we get the three points.
PAUL POGBA, Manchester United midfielder, looking ahead to the coming run of tough fixtures that will likely determine his team's final position at the end of the season.

"When we need three points, we get the three points. But these big games coming up will determine where we end up. I feel great, the team feels good."
While United's supporters revelled in watching the legendary figure in the dugout mastermind another victory, Fulham's fans booed Claudio Ranieri down the tunnel after the final whistle.
The odds are against the team with the worst defensive record in the division, with 58 goals conceded, pulling off a miraculous escape given that they are seven points adrift of 17th place with 12 games remaining.
Craven Cottage, normally such a genteel place to watch a game of football, was an angry place with fans aiming chants of "You don't know what you're doing" at a manager who appears to have run out of ideas after three months in the job.
Curiously, it was the wind, which made the ball move weirdly in the air, and not their opponents that took United a while to get used to.

But it was not long before Pogba decided it was time to take charge in the middle of the park. The France midfielder's authority on the ball settled his teammates and it soon became clear United had a plan to get Martial running at Denis Odoi.
Pogba has been involved in 13 league goals under Solskjaer, scoring eight and creating five, and he eased United ahead with a powerful strike in the 14th minute.
In the 23rd minute, Martial produced a moment of magic in keeping with United's scintillating counter-attacking traditions. The forward started his run just inside his own half as he ignored Odoi's attempts to bring him down, shimmied past Maxime Le Marchand and opened up his body to curl a lovely shot into the far corner.
They added another when strong work from Romelu Lukaku led to Le Marchand bringing down Juan Mata just inside the box.
Pogba dispatched his penalty with aplomb and United spent the final 25 minutes keeping their powder dry for PSG.
Solskjaer said that while there was a chance his tinkering could have backfired, his footballing philosophy was "if you don't risk, you don't win".
The Norwegian said: "I have to trust the players, I didn't feel there was a problem playing any of them."

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United were the architects of their "own downfall" after they were beaten by Wolves for the second time in three weeks.
Tuesday's 2-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux in which Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences means United have little margin for error if they are to finish in the top four.
Scott McTominay gave the away side an early lead - his first for the club - but Diogo Jota equalised after a mistake by Fred before Chris Smalling scored an own goal to inflict Solskjaer's first defeat since he was appointed on a full-time basis.
While the Norwegian had no complaints about referee Mike Dean's decision to send off Young just before the hour mark, he was frustrated that his players failed to convert more of their chances.
He said: "A very good start, we should have been three up. It was a very good performance until they scored the second goal.
"But for their goalkeeper, we should have won. That's football for you and that's why it's the game we all love, it's not like maths."
Asked whether the wobble - United have picked up three points out of a possible nine - means things are "resetting" at Old Trafford after an excellent initial impact, Solskjaer claimed he could not "control the result".

Points won by Manchester United out of a possible nine in their last three Premier League matches.

He added: "We don't look at it as that. We can control what we do on the pitch performance-wise, and we've played well enough tonight.
"So I don't think there is any kickback. I was very pleased with the chances and the intent."
The result means the Red Devils remain fifth, and two points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
They still need to face league champions Manchester City and Chelsea at home, while Luke Shaw will be suspended for their next two games after collecting his 10th yellow card of the campaign.
However, Solskjaer insisted he was still "confident" and that "it is going to be difficult for anybody who plays against us".
The 46-year-old, who revealed he had an eye on the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona next Wednesday, added: "Now we need 15 (points) from the last six (matches), so we don't have room for many more losses.
"It is a difficult run, but then we are a very good team as well.
"We will use one or two days to analyse and recover, and then we will prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge."
Separately, Fulham became the second club to be relegated after a 4-1 loss at Watford on Tuesday.
Despite splurging over £100 million (S$177.9 million) on players since winning promotion last year, it has been a wretched term for the Cottagers, who have the league's worst defensive record, shipping 76 goals in 33 games.
Owner Shahid Khan yesterday apologised to the fans for the debacle before stating that the club's hierarchy "hold ourselves accountable".

Football: Klopp defiant after Liverpool drop points, insist West Ham 'didn't scare us'

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hit back at West Ham United skipper Mark Noble after the midfielder said his side had "scared" the Premier League leaders in a 1-1 draw on Monday (Feb 4).
Klopp's side missed the chance to stretch their lead over Manchester City at the top to five points as Michail Antonio cancelled out Sadio Mane's 22nd-minute opener at the London Stadium.
Liverpool were off the pace and West Ham, who had conceded 16 goals in their last four league games against Klopp's side, would not have been flattered had they won.
"We scared them, I'm just gutted we didn't come away with the three points," Noble, who wasted 12th-placed West Ham's best chance after the break, said.
Told of Noble's comments in his post-match news conference, Klopp said: "I wish for all West Ham fans that Mark Noble and his team would scare more teams really, not only us tonight.
"I don't know him very well, I don't know why he speaks of us like that after a game. They didn't scare us, they defended well. It was a normal away game and other away games have been worse than tonight. They have quality and I don't know why they don't have more results."
Having drawn at home to Leicester City last week, when they also took the lead, Liverpool have dropped four points in two games which has allowed closest challengers Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur to close the gap.
Should City beat Everton on Wednesday, they will knock Liverpool off the top for the first time since early December.
Klopp, who said both James Milner and Virgil van Dijk had played despite being ill this week, played down talk of Liverpool feeling the pressure as they try to win their first league title since 1989-90.
"We have to fight, it is not about pressure - it's about enjoying the situation you are in," Klopp told reporters.
"We have 62 points, have lost one game in the league season so far which is very positive, but I see your faces already you feel a bit sorry for us.
"You don't have to. We are fine. We are fine and everything is good, but of course tonight was a tough game. If you have a day like that, then you get a point at West Ham, for me that's absolutely fine."
There was clearly no love lost between Klopp and West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini at the end with some strong words seemingly exchanged about Liverpool's goal, after Milner appeared to be clearly offside in the build-up.
"Klopp is used to offside, he scored against me with Borussia Dortmund against Malaga, with a goal that was seven metres offside. He cannot complain about anything," said Pellegrini.

Football: Griezmann special earns Atletico 1-1 draw at Sevilla

SEVILLE (REUTERS) - A stunning free kick goal from Antoine Griezmann earned Atletico Madrid a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in an entertaining game between La Liga's second and third-placed sides on Sunday (Jan 6) which weakened both sides' pursuit of leaders Barcelona.
Sevilla took a deserved lead at a packed and rocking Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in the 37th minute with a close-range strike from Wissam Ben Yedder following a clever team move, shortly after striker Andre Silva had also smacked the post for them.
Ben Yedder missed a clear chance to double Sevilla's advantage but was thwarted by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, before Atletico pulled themselves level right at the end of the first half through Griezmann's sizzling set-piece.
The draw left Atletico second in the standings on 35 points with Sevilla third on 33, while Barcelona, on 37 points and in action against Getafe later on Sunday, were handed the chance to move five points clear at the top.
In a calmer second half, Atletico, who created few chances throughout the game, managed to plug the holes that Sevilla, through veteran winger Jesus Navas in particular, had been exploiting.
Ben Yedder missed another chance for the home side, failing to find the target when clean through while team mate Quincy Promes saw an arrowed effort tipped away by Oblak.
Sevilla's goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik repelled both of Atletico's best efforts, from Griezmann and Thomas Partey.

Football: Chelsea beat Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties to reach Europa League final

LONDON (REUTERS) - Eden Hazard hit the winning penalty for Chelsea to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 in a shootout on Thursday (May 9) and reach the Europa Cup final where they will meet fellow Londoners Arsenal.
The lively semi-final contest had finished 1-1 after the sides had produced the same scoreline in Frankfurt a week ago.
Chelsea had looked in charge half an hour into the game when Hazard, tipped to leave the club this summer, dodged and shimmied round the Frankfurt defence on the left flank before pushing a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Ruben Loftus Cheek for the England midfielder to score in the 28th minute.
But three minutes after the break Luka Jovic split the defence, playing a neat one-two with Mijat Gacinovic before shooting home past stranded Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to even the scoreline.
The visitors had the psychological advantage and pressed 2013 champions Chelsea with Luka Jovic, Ante Rebic and Danny da Costa constantly dangerous going forward looking for the invaluable second away goal.
At the other end Giroud, Willian and substitutes Davide Zappacosta and Gonzalo Higuain squandered chances for the home side in an error-strewn last 20 minutes of normal time and frantic end-to-end half an hour of extra time.
Arrizabalaga saved penalties from Martin Hinteregger and Goncalo Paciencia in the shootout while Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta also saw his shot stopped.

Football: Arsenal to investigate racist abuse of Napoli's Koulibaly

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal have launched an investigation into the racist abuse suffered by Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during their 2-0 Europa League quarter-final first leg victory on Thursday (April 11).
A Snapchat video emerged on social media after the match where a fan at the Emirates Stadium can be heard using a racist term towards the Senegalese.
"We utterly condemn the use of any racist language and have launched an investigation to identify the culprit," an Arsenal spokesman said.
"We operate a zero tolerance approach and anyone behaving like this is not welcome at Arsenal and will be banned from matches.
"We have an extremely diverse community of fans who are all part of the Arsenal family and such incidents are rare at Emirates Stadium."
Koulibaly has become a symbol of the battle against racism in Italian soccer since being subjected to racist insults from some Inter Milan fans during a Serie A match in December.
Elsewhere on Thursday, three Chelsea fans were stopped from entering Slavia Prague's stadium for their Europa League game after an alleged racist chant about Liverpool's Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah circulated on social media.
