Home's Saswa is first casualty of SPL season
After barely a quarter of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, Home United are the first team to part ways with their head coach as they announced the mutual termination of Saswadimata Dasuki's contract yesterday.
The Protectors said that assistant coach Noh Rahman will take over on an interim basis as the club are in the process of appointing a new head coach.
They added in a media statement: "Home United FC and head coach Saswadimata Dasuki have come to a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect.
"HUFC would like to thank Saswa for his contributions, having joined the club as assistant coach in 2017, and being appointed head coach for the 2019 season.
"During his stint, he brought honours to the club, including the recent Community Shield. We thank him for his work and wish him the best for his future endeavours."
The former Singapore international, 49, declined comment, but it is understood that one of the contributing factors behind the decision is the club's poor results.
Despite being touted as one of the title contenders, Home are languishing in seventh spot in the nine-team SPL, winning just two out of six games as they struggled with injuries and poor form.
In the AFC Cup, they are second in Group H with seven points after four games, one point behind Indonesia's PSM Makassar.
It was in this second-tier Asian competition last year that Saswadimata enjoyed his greatest coaching success when he was assistant to Aidil Sharin as the Protectors emerged as Asean Zonal winners.
Noh Rahman, who was a strength and conditioning coach with the Football Association of Singapore before he joined Home this year, will face his first test on Wednesday against fourth-placed Geylang International.
The 38-year-old former Lion said: "It is never a nice feeling, standing in a position of a colleague whom you have worked with since the start of the season.
"As for my plans and goals, that is to improve the individual performance of the players and the team performance, at least until the new coach comes in.
"It is a big challenge, but we need to approach this positively."

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has said Liverpool would resemble a "little weak flower" should they succumb to pressure and change the style which has put them in Premier League title contention this season.
The Liverpool manager took exception to criticism of his tactics and substitutions last weekend when they drew 0-0 at Everton, and slipped behind Manchester City in the table for the first time since Dec 7.
Klopp revisited the issue at a pre-match conference ahead of Burnley's visit to Anfield today, insisting he has not curbed the Reds' attacking nature in recent away matches and it would be a sign of weakness to do so with only nine matches left.
"We do go for it but that doesn't mean we throw 11 players in their box and hope we score," he said.
"That is not how it works. That is why I was a bit disappointed in the last press conference because we don't play PlayStation (football) and you all know that.
"That is a sign of being desperate... The way we did it brought us where we are and if someone thinks we should now be 10 points ahead of City, I can't help this person.
"Let's do what we did that brought us here plus more intensity if possible, with a positive atmosphere around us, and not be this little weak flower. The target is to win the game, not to go nuts in the game."
Klopp's sparing use of winger Xherdan Shaqiri and, to a lesser extent, midfielder Naby Keita in recent weeks has prompted accusations of not taking sufficient risks.
Shaqiri had a major influence on Liverpool's 100 per cent win rate in December but has played only 210 minutes in the league this year. He was an unused substitute at Goodison Park last week.
Keita, meanwhile, has played only 82 minutes since the 3-0 win over Bournemouth early last month.
Klopp explained: "Shaq had a little injury and was out. There was something with his back and he needed a little time.
"We have to think about a lot of things before a game. We played quite a few teams with really good set pieces and we needed to make sure we had the right line-up and set-up. Naby is in a good moment and has trained well. That's it."
Striker Mohamed Salah, who won the top scorer's Golden Boot last season with 32 goals, is one goal shy of his 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool. He can equal Alan Shearer's record of scoring 50 goals for a single club faster than any other player (66 games).
Although Salah has not scored in his last four games in all competitions, Klopp is unconcerned about the Egyptian's goal drought.
"He has an unbelievable record, his goals brought us where we are," the German said.
"If you are a striker or an offensive player and you have chances in a game, you want to score with them. That is clear.
"But as a manager I am more than used to it that players do not score all the time, that's how it is."
Klopp also advised the club's supporters to get a good night's sleep to improve the atmosphere at Anfield for the early kick-off today.
"We need atmosphere at 12 o'clock," he said. "If you have a ticket, go to bed at 10pm latest, don't drink and be on your toes from the first to the last second.
"We have to be really good to beat this team, (Burnley manager Sean) Dyche is doing an amazing job."

LONDON • Unai Emery has urged Arsenal to show more consistency as they prepare to host Napoli in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final today.
The Gunners suffered a major blow in their bid to finish in the Premier League top four to qualify for next season's Champions League when they slipped to fifth spot after a 1-0 loss at Everton on Sunday.
But they can also book a place in Europe's top club competition if they win the second-tier Europa League.
The manager said yesterday: "It's a big test. We want to play against the best teams. Napoli are one of them. It's going to be difficult, but we have confidence. We need to be very consistent in two matches.
"Our idea is to win and not concede goals. We are prepared for extra time or penalties."
He will have to wait on injuries to Laurent Koscielny and Granit Xhaka while Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could return after starting on the bench at Everton.
Arsenal have been formidable at home with seven straight wins at the Emirates in all competitions, including second-leg comeback wins over Bate Borisov and Rennes in the Europa League.
And that will not be good news for Napoli, who have not kept a clean sheet in any competition since beating Red Bull Salzburg in the last-16 first leg on March 7. The Italian side also lost to struggling Empoli before a disappointing draw with Genoa on Sunday.
But Carlo Ancelotti's side will be boosted by the availability of forward Lorenzo Insigne, who has scored 13 goals this season, after he played 23 minutes against Genoa.
Arsenal's London rivals Chelsea appear to have an easier route. They head to the Czech Republic for their first leg against Slavia Prague buoyed by Eden Hazard's double against West Ham on Monday.

Ramsey moving to Juve on five-year $62m deal
Ramsey moving to Juve on five-year $62m deal
LONDON • Aaron Ramsey has agreed a five-year deal with Juventus worth £36 million (S$62 million) and will join the Italian champions on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old Wales midfielder has been discussing a move for weeks and will leave Arsenal after 10 years. It had been clear he would move on in the summer and Juventus had been the front runners to secure his signature.
He will be paid around £140,000 a week, making him Juventus' second-highest earner behind Cristiano Ronaldo but ahead of Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa.
Juventus, who have won the past seven Serie A titles, signed Ronaldo for €100 million (S$156 million) last summer and are on 53 points, nine clear of Napoli after 19 games.
They have reached two of the last four Champions League finals, losing to Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid in 2017.
They have reached the last 16 of Europe's top club competition this season, where they will face another Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
Juventus manager Max Allegri and director Fabio Paratici are huge admirers of Ramsey, who is set to be given a place in the starting XI, most likely with Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi in a three-man midfield.
He is likely to replace one of Emre Can, Rodrigo Bentancur and Sami Khedira, with the latter possibly leaving in the summer.
Ramsey signed for Arsenal from Cardiff for £4.8 million. He has played 252 top-flight games for the club, scoring 52 goals. He won three FA Cups, scoring the winning goal in the 2014 and 2017 finals.
He played arguably the best football of his career during Euro 2016 when Wales reached the semi-finals. But he was suspended for that match, which they lost 2-0 to eventual winners Portugal.
He has had his fair share of injury problems but Juventus are delighted to secure him on a free.
For Arsenal, who are playing in the second-tier Europa League for a second straight season, they will regret seeing a player in his prime leave under these circumstances.
With Arsenal choosing to renew the contract of Mesut Ozil, another star whose deal was due to expire this summer, they put themselves in a position where they could not re-sign Ramsey too, without keeping their £200 million annual wage bill under control.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery also had major reservations over both Ozil and Ramsey fitting into his plans and the style he wants to play.

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery
Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery has said Arsenal will be able to sign players only on loan this month.
The Arsenal manager, who has no issue with Aaron Ramsey reportedly close to leaving for Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season, has been linked with moves for Barcelona's Denis Suarez and Sevilla's Ever Banega.
Speaking ahead of today's trip to West Ham, the Spaniard admitted he would have to wheel and deal in the January transfer window as funds were limited.
"We cannot sign permanently," he said. "We can only loan players. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now. I cannot say more."
Emery worked with Banega and Suarez at Sevilla and the latter is out of favour at the Nou Camp and would help to solve Arsenal's lack of attacking width.
However, it remains to be seen whether the club can secure a loan for the 25-year-old midfielder, with Barcelona asking for £10 million (S$17.2 million). Sevilla are likely to place an even heftier price on Banega, who has been a key figure for Emery in the past.
"I know this player and he's a very good player," the 47-year-old said.
The former Sevilla boss also insisted he was not unhappy with Arsenal's financial restrictions.
He added: "We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
"I am very happy. I know it is not easy for us now in this transfer market and, if we can find one player who can help us like we need, with the quality and a different player for getting in our squad, we are going to do it.
"But I am happy with every player today. It is really some injuries that didn't help us in the last matches because we struggled with different injuries with the players... if one or two players can come and help us, that is perfect."
The Gunners' defensive problems have eased for their visit to the London Stadium, with Hector Bellerin, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal all returning to full training earlier this week.
Midfielder Mesut Ozil could also play against Manuel Pellegrini's men, after shaking off the knee injury that has kept him out since Boxing Day.
