Football: Man City teenager Matondo moves to Schalke

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City winger Rabbi Matondo has become the latest British youngster to sign for an overseas club after joining German side Schalke 04 on a four-year contract on Wednesday (Jan 30).
The 18-year-old's decision to leave the English champions is the latest example of a growing trend of young British talent opting to go abroad in search of greater playing opportunities.
No financial details of the deal were disclosed but British media reported that Schalke paid £10 million (S$17 million) to sign Matondo, who has one international cap for Wales but has never made a senior appearance for City.
"A huge British talent has signed for the Royal Blues," Schalke said in a statement announcing the deal on their website.
"The 18-year-old has been given a four-year contract, which will expire on June 30th, 2023."
Germany has emerged as the destination of choice for young British players who find it hard to break into the first team at the Premier League's elite clubs, following midfielder Jadon Sancho's successful switch to Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi had a transfer request turned down by his club this week as he attempted to push through a move to German giants Bayern Munich.

Football: Newcastle plunge 10-man Huddersfield closer to the drop

NEWCASTLE, England (REUTERS) - Newcastle United's 2-0 win over 10-man Huddersfield Town on Saturday (Feb 23) eased their Premier League safety fears and sent the Terriers hurtling ever faster towards relegation to the Championship.
The top-flight's basement club looked lost again as soon as captain Tommy Smith was given a 20th-minute red card and second-half goals from Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez sent them spinning to a 13th defeat in their last 14 league matches.
The St James' Park faithful also found a new hero to cheer as they eased their way clear of the relegation zone, offering a standing ovation to record signing Miguel Almiron after the Paraguayan made a striking full debut.
A fourth straight league loss for Huddersfield's new manager Jan Siewert left the Terriers stranded six points behind Fulham and 14 adrift of 17th-placed Cardiff City as Newcastle, with a third straight home win under Rafa Benitez, moved up to 14th.
Almiron, making his first start for Newcastle after his club record £20 million (S$35 million) move from Atlanta United, came off to rapturous cheers after tormenting Huddersfield's defence for 80 minutes.
The full debut of the Paraguayan was eagerly awaited by the home fans with the 25-year-old being their biggest signing since Michael Owen 14 years earlier.
Almiron delivered handsomely and quickly, chipping over Jonas Lossl and hitting the post early on before having another effort cleared off the line.
He was also the victim of Smith's lunging, over-the-top challenge which earned the visiting captain a straight red card before his speed and trickery continued to torment a depleted rearguard.
Only Newcastle's finishing - they hit the woodwork four times and were denied by brilliant saves from Lossl - let them down as they dominated proceedings.
A minute after the break, though, Rondon broke the deadlock with a low strike before laying on the 52nd-minute clincher from Spaniard Perez.
Benitez was left delighted by Almiron's impact.
"His contribution in terms of work rate was really good," he told the BBC.
"He will be pleased with his performance and the fans will be too. He will give us a different characteristics and different options.
"We needed to win and did it creating a lot of chances. We had 29 attempts which is not bad - their keeper did well. But it does not matter because we got the win."
Siewert recognised Smith's sending-off as the turning-point.
"The red card broke our neck today. Before we had chances and possession but the red card broke our neck," he said.

Fans hopeful and in awe after 'crazy' race

Fans hopeful and in awe after 'crazy' race

AARON KOK, 42, travel company owner (Liverpool fan for 31 years, been to Anfield 17 times)

Both set of results were expected but the pain is real.
Never before have I seen the pre-game crowd so boisterous. I could sense the anticipation, excitement and hope in the crowd, yet there was an air of tension and semi-resignation.
But it has been an amazing ride. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that we would have been involved in this crazy, intense race.

BENNETT CHIAM, 42, sales manager (Reds fan since 1989)

Being a fan for so long, I have been through the ups and downs with this club but I recognise progress. I believe Jurgen Klopp is the right man to bring us forward.
When the match ended, we sang "We Shall Not Be Moved" so loud because we believe in a very bright future for our club.
Perhaps our elusive 19th (title) will come next season. With Klopp, nothing is impossible.

HARISS HARUN, 28, Singapore and Johor Darul Ta'zim captain (Liverpool fan)

You would think 97 points should be enough to land the title, but Manchester City were almost perfect.
Still, as a Liverpool fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the season even though we didn't win the EPL title.
The team just kept going until the end and that was very pleasing as a fan. Hopefully, we can build on this to win the league next season.

KHAIRUL AMRI, 34, Singapore and Felda United striker (Manchester City fan)

I am more of a Pep Guardiola fan and he has proved to be the difference this season.
He has instilled this strong mentality in his players who have stepped up when required.
His squad rotation has been spot on... they are mostly in control for large parts of the games, and are also able to win them.
They now have this winning aura about them.

Football: Liverpool fans in Madrid and Singapore celebrate Reds' Champions League win over Tottenham

SINGAPORE - They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday (June 1) with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.

"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am on Sunday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."

Football: Liverpool now on Man City's level insists Klopp, despite defeat

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp believes his Liverpool side are at last a genuine match for Manchester City despite this week's 2-1 loss to the Premier League champions.
Thursday's defeat (Jan 3) was the first time Liverpool had lost in the league season, but they still remained four points clear at the top of the table from their title rivals.
The Reds beat City three times last term but Liverpool manager Klopp believes his side are a now much-improved outfit.
"From my point of view, we were never on a level with City since I came in," said Klopp.
"We won games against them, especially since Pep, but in these games City were better."
The German added: "We only scored more goals, but the possession was at least 60:40 for them in all the games but we won them. Now, it was 50:50.
"Last year, the Champions League (quarter-final) game at home when we won 3-0 it was a brilliant game but we were under pressure in a lot of moments.

"I don't know if we had more than four shots on target, but we were quite clinical that day.
"This game was different to all the other ones we have played so far. Away to City is the most difficult game you can imagine at the moment.
"Yes we lost 2-1, but no-one would have been surprised if it was a draw and with a little bit of luck we could have won the game," said Klopp, whose side face fellow Premier League club Wolves in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.
