Football: Mourinho concedes Man United incapable of living with Liverpool

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jose Mourinho hinted Manchester United's players are simply not good enough to compete with Liverpool after being brushed aside 3-1 at Anfield on Sunday (Dec 16) by the Premier League leaders.
Mourinho claimed ahead of the game that Liverpool have had luck on their side this season, but while there was fortune in substitute Xherdan Shaqiri's two deflected strikes in the final 17 minutes, the visitors did not deserve anything more than a fifth league defeat of the season.
"The players gave everything and when they give everything I'm never upset with them. I have a good feeling towards them, they play in relation to their qualities, the same way the opponent played in relation to their qualities," said Mourinho.
"They (Liverpool) are fast, intense, aggressive, physical, they play 200 miles per hour with the ball and without the ball."
Mourinho also turned on his players' injury record after having to name a patched up defence with Eric Bailly replacing Chris Smalling at the last minute after the latter picked up an injury in the warm-up.
"We have lots of problems related to physicality," added Mourinho. "We have lots of players that I could consider injury problems, because some of our players are always injured."
However, there will be little sympathy for the Portuguese's protests as he left £89 million (S$154 million) signing Paul Pogba on the bench for the full 90 minutes, while £50 summer recruit Fred didn't even make the squad.

Victory took Liverpool back a point above Manchester City and a mammoth 19 clear of United, who remain in sixth and are now 11 points off the top four.
However, Mourinho insisted United can still qualify for next season's Champions League.
"I know that we lost some other matches but we played Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City away, probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham," he added. "I think we have more possibilities to do more points in the second half of the season than the first." .

Liverpool lay seige

The contrasting form showed by both sides this season continued as United strained to keep a rampant Liverpool at bay and were only level for so long thanks to a huge error by home goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
"You (the media) didn't say too many nice things about them and good things about us. It was made for another result. We wanted to avoid that and we fought really hard," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool laid siege to the visitors' goal early on with David de Gea stretching to keep out a low drive from Roberto Firmino, Ashley Young clearing off the line and Fabinho firing wide from the edge of the box.
"A brilliant start. One of the best performances we've had since I've been at Liverpool," added Klopp. "The first half an hour was outstanding." Only City have kept Klopp's side from scoring in the Premier League this season and a United defence that has kept just one clean sheet in the league since September never looked capable of holding out like they had in their two previous visits to Anfield.
Mourinho's men were finally breached when Mane controlled Fabinho's chipped ball into the box on his chest and volleyed past the onrushing De Gea on 24 minutes.
However, Liverpool's momentum was punctured by an Alisson gift 12 minutes before the break.
The Brazilian was Liverpool's hero with an injury-time save to secure the Reds' place in the last 16 of the Champions League against Napoli on Tuesday.
But he spilled Romelu Lukaku's simple cross into the path of the grateful Lingard to bundle the ball into an unguarded net.
The second half followed a similar pattern but it wasn't until Klopp turned to Shaqiri 20 minutes from time that Liverpool found a way through.
Three minutes later De Gea did well to prevent Ander Herrera turning Mane's cross into his own net, but the ball fell for Shaqiri and his effort cannoned off Young and in off the underside of the bar.
Shaqiri got lucky again with 10 minutes to go when, this time on his favoured left foot, his shot flicked off the diving Bailly to leave De Gea helpless.

Football: Some Man United players need 'reality check' after poor run, says Solskjaer

LONDON (DPA) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels some of his players need a "reality check" after a poor run of form. United have lost five of their last seven in all competitions, punctuated by a 3-0 defeat at Barcelona on Tuesday that knocked them out of the Champions League quarter-finals.
Prior to that, they won 14 of 17 games after Solskjaer took charge to climb back into the race for the Premier League's top four and Champions League qualification.
"I've learnt a lot about them over the months I've been here," Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho in December, told a news conference on Friday (April 19).
"Most of them have really impressed me in their attitude.
"Of course there are some who need to get a reality check on where they're at.
"But most of them know they can improve if they keep working as they do."
United are currently sixth in the league, two points behind Arsenal, with five games remaining.
Their fate could well be decided over the next nine days with Sunday's visit to Everton followed by home games against defending champions Manchester City and fifth-placed Chelsea.
"We know we have to be realistic here and we know we have a job to be done," Solskjaer said. "These three games coming up, they're our short-term focus.
"We shouldn't think about anything but having a great week ahead of us."

Football: Cristiano Ronaldo recalled by Portugal for first time since World Cup

LISBON (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo was recalled by the Portuguese national squad on Friday (March 15) for the first time since last year's World Cup.
The 34-year-old, who is Portugal's most capped player with 154 appearances and all-time leading scorer with 85 goals, had not been included for any games in the second half of last year.
Coach Fernando Santos had initially said that a mutual decision had been made to give Ronaldo a rest following his move from Real Madrid to Juventus but had been ambiguous about the player's future when questioned in November.
Portugal continued to flourish without Ronaldo, winning their Nations League group against Poland and Italy with a game to spare to qualify for the final four-team tournament which the country will host in June.
However, any doubts about his future were removed when Ronaldo's name was among 25 read by Santos during a news conference for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Ukraine and Serbia.
"Cristiano is the best player in the world and is returning to his team," said Santos. "Any team is stronger with him."
Portugal host Serbia in Lisbon on March 22 and Ukraine three days later.

Football: History made as women to referee men's AFC Cup clash between Yangon United and Naga World

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - The Asian Football Confederation announced Tuesday (May 14) that for the first time an all-female referee team will take charge of a men's continental club cup clash.
Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita and assistants Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi will officiate the AFC Cup match between Myanmar's Yangon United and Cambodia's Naga World at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.
"This will be the first time three female referees preside in the Asian Football Confederation's club competitions, marking a new milestone in Asian refereeing," the AFC said in a statement.
The AFC Cup is the second-string Asian club competition, a rung below the AFC Champions League.
Women officials have only previously been employed as assistant referees in AFC Cup matches, with Australians Sarah Ho and Alysson Flynn becoming the first in 2014.
"This is one of my dreams," said the experienced Yamashita, who officiated in the 2016 and 2018 Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup and 2018 Women's Asian Cup.
"We've worked very hard and this is the result."

Assistant referee Teshirogi said her appointment will inspire female referees in Asia while Bozono said the experience will help in her preparations for the FIFA Women's World Cup in June, where the trio will be among 12 officials from the AFC.
"It is exciting to work with Yoshimi and Naomi. They are very experienced and have been very supportive. I will learn a lot from them," Bozono said.

Football: 'We want Messi to always be at Barca', says club president Bartomeu

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has said he plans to offer Lionel Messi a new contract in the hope the Argentinian will stay at the club his whole career.
Messi's current deal runs until 2021, the same year he turns 34, but the Argentinian has been in brilliant form again this season.
He has 42 goals for club and country while his 32 scored in La Liga have propelled Barca to within touching distance of their fourth league title in five years.
"We would like to renew his contract, that's the idea," Bartomeu told ESPN in an interview published on Friday (April 5).
"I believe he still has many years in front of him and in the coming months we will sit down with him so that he has many more years at Barcelona."
Messi joined Barcelona's academy aged 13 and is one of the few players left from Pep Guardiola's iconic team that won the treble in 2009.
In total, he has won nine La Liga titles with the club, as well as four in the Champions League and six in the Copa del Rey.
"Messi is a one-club man," Bartomeu added. "It's more than what he does on the pitch, his relationship with Barca will last forever.
"I use the example of Pele, who was always at Santos. We want Messi to always be at Barca, whether that's playing on the pitch or being linked to the club (after he retires)."

Emery Gunning for signings

Emery Gunning for signings

LONDON • Unai Emery was pleased with the "progress and passion" of his young attackers after Arsenal's 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory against Blackpool on Saturday, but he also made no secret of his intention to bring in reinforcements during January's transfer window.
The Gunners cruised to victory with teenager Joe Willock scoring twice - becoming the youngest Arsenal player to score in an FA Cup tie since Aaron Ramsey in 2010 - before Alex Iwobi added gloss to the scoreline.
"I think the club is working on the possibility to take some players who can help us during these next four months," said Emery.
"Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre back, but it is not easy because also (Konstantinos) Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position."
Arsenal are reportedly in negotiations with Barcelona over the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Denis Suarez who played for Emery at Sevilla during the 2014-15 season.
Suarez, who spent two years at Manchester City as an academy player between 2011 and 2013, has played 46 league matches for Barcelona in 21/2 seasons but has never been able to hold down a regular starting place.

SHOPPING LIST
Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre back, but it is not easy because also (Konstantinos) Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is clear which positions he wants to reinforce.

The Spaniard, who has one international cap, won in 2016, is under contract with Barcelona until 2020 and would cost around £20 million (S$34.6 million).
Asked whether he saw Suarez as a winger, Emery added: "He was playing in his career, and with me also, as a right or left winger."
Emery retained only four players in the starting line-up from the 4-1 Premier League victory over Fulham on New Year's Day, and it was the young attackers who shone, with Willock ably supported by fellow 19-year-olds Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Emery said: "We need players with commitment. We need players who are prepared when the team needs them and can step up. We mixed experienced players in the squad with some young players like Joe, Eddie and Ainsley.
"It was a good combination. They showed us they are progressing with the team and, mostly importantly, they showed their passion."
Willock's day could have been even better but a linesman's flag ruled out a hat-trick goal.
"The linesman crushed my dreams with the hat-trick, but that's football and, hopefully, I can get another opportunity soon. Hopefully, the boss keeps believing in me," said the midfielder.
Arsenal's team bus was briefly delayed on their way to the match after a Blackpool fan climbed onto its roof in protest at the Lancashire seaside club's owners.
The fan was photographed sitting on top of the coach at Arsenal's team hotel shortly before the London side were to depart for the match at Bloomfield Road.
Supporters of third-tier Blackpool have regularly protested against club owner Owen Oyston and many are boycotting home games with gates averaging only 4,129 at their 17,000-seater ground which hosted Premier League football in 2010-11.
The man was eventually arrested and the Arsenal team arrived in good time for kick-off.
Asked if the incident had affected their preparations, Emery said: "There was no change for us. We prepared as usual and I am proud of our work today.
"We had big commitment, good concentration, we were competitive and we imposed our quality little by little."
