Football: Man United website hints Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be interim boss, replacing sacked Jose Mourinho

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to replace Jose Mourinho as Manchester United's interim manager after the Premier League club appeared to accidentally announce the appointment on their website.
Mourinho was axed on TuesdayÂ (Dec 18) after just 2Â½Â years in charge at Old Trafford, and the troubled Premier League club are reportedly ready to bring back one of their old heroes to take his place on a temporary basis.
Solskjaer, currently in charge of Norway's Molde, was widely reported to be United's leading candidate for the interim role for the rest of the season while they search for a permanent appointment in the close season.
There has been no official announcement from the club.
However, a video appeared on United's official website celebrating Solskjaer and seeming to confirm his appointment.
A video of him scoring the winner for United in their 1999 Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich was accompanied with the headline "The most famous night of Ole's career".
Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also appeared to confirm Solskjaer's appointment, writing on Twitter: "Great day for Norwegian football. Good luck keeping control of the Red Devils."

Solskjaer, nicknamed the baby-faced assassin, scored 128 goals in 367 appearances for United during 10 seasons playing under the club's legendary boss Alex Ferguson, who signed him from Molde in 1996.
After retiring, the Norwegian was appointed as United's reserve team boss before joining Molde as manager in 2010.
Solskjaer had an ill-fated spell in charge of Cardiff in 2014, winning just nine of his 30 games as they were relegated from the Premier League, before being dismissed and returning to Molde in 2015.
Molde's season ended last month and does not resume until March 31, with Solskjaer unlikely to refuse the chance to manage a prestigious club like United.
Ironically, his first match in charge of the Red Devils could be against Cardiff on Saturday if the mooted deal is completed in time.
United are in sixth place in the Premier League after their worst start for 28 years.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane are among the bookmakers' favourites to take the United job at the end of the season.

MADRID â€¢ Real Madrid will fly out to the United Arab Emirates to take on Japan's Kashima Antlers in the semi-finals of the Fifa Club World Cup on Wednesday on a winning note after beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in LaLiga on Saturday.
Karim Benzema's 13th-minute strike was enough for Real to close the gap to two points on leaders Barcelona, who played Levante this morning (Singapore time), but the uninspiring display drew boos from the fans in the Santiago Bernabeu for the second time in four days following Wednesday's 3-0 Champions League defeat by CSKA Moscow.
Real were made to sweat for the victory by second-from-bottom Vallecano, who would have snatched a point in stoppage time had Sergio Ramos not cleared the second of Thibaut Courtois' double saves, from Alex Alegria and Emiliano Velazquez, off the line.
"That's football," said relieved Real coach Santiago Solari. "That's why it's such a beautiful game. When you're not playing great, when nothing's going right, you have to be prepared to suffer."
Little was seen from Real stars such as Luka Modric, presented with his Ballon d'Or before kick-off.
"We didn't give much away to Rayo and we created quite a few chances. With all respect to Rayo, who are a great side, I think we should have scored more," added Solari.
Earlier, Antoine Griezmann struck the winner for Atletico Madrid 10 minutes from the end after Real Valladolid had fought back from a two-goal half-time deficit. The 3-2 win moved Atletico to the top of the table, level with leaders Barcelona and and Sevilla on 31 points but Diego Simeone's men are third with an inferior goal difference behind both.
Meanwhile, Modric has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for not attending this month's Ballon d'Or ceremony where he was given the award, saying their decision was unfair to fellow players and voters. The Croatia captain broke the duo's decade-long stranglehold on the prestigious prize last month.
"I cannot speak about why someone didn't turn up at an award ceremony, it's their choice. It seems these votes and awards are only significant when they win," the 33-year-old playmaker told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku continued his rich vein of form by scoring two goals, including a late winner, to give his side a comeback 3-2 home win over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday (March 2).
It took the Belgian's tally to four goals in two games after he netted a brace in Wednesday's 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, with playmaker Andreas Pereira grabbing the other for the hosts in a rip-roaring clash at Old Trafford.
The result lifted United back into fourth place on 58 points from 29 games, one ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal who were held to a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the early kickoff.
Sixth-placed Chelsea, who are on 53 points, have two games in hand and visit second bottom Fulham on Sunday.
Lukaku, who has endured dips in form during what has been a turbulent season at Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over from Jose Mourinho as caretaker manager in December, was back to his lethal best.
"I was focused on the win and help my team mates," Lukaku told the BBC.
"We knew we had to win the game today and did it. Not our best game but we have to be happy.
"The manager gave me another chance today. We have to look one game at a time and are working hard on the training ground. We are ready for the challenge."

SPECTACULAR GOAL

Having weathered an early storm in which United missed three gilt-edged chances, Southampton took the lead in the 26th minute when Yan Valery scored his first goal for the club in spectacular fashion.
The 20-year old French wing-back, who joined Southampton from Ligue 1 side Rennes during the close season, unleashed a thunderbolt from 25 metres which beat United's stunned keeper David De Gea at the near post.
The home side equalised in the 53rd minute as the lively Pereira teed himself up for a long-range shot and curled it brilliantly past Saints keeper Angus Gunn.
Six minutes later, Pereira released Lukaku with fine footwork and the striker side-stepped a defender before he drilled a low shot with his weaker right foot into the bottom corner of the net.
James Ward-Prowse appeared to have snatched a point for the Saints with a stunning free kick from 25 metres before a frantic finish as Lukaku sent the home crowd into raptures.
A slick move ended with Lukaku turning his marker on the edge of the penalty area and drilling in another right-foot shot into the bottom corner in the 88th minute.
Gunn saved a poor stoppage-time penalty by Paul Pogba but the Frenchman's blunder did not dampen the mood at Old Trafford after Solskjaer stretched his impressive league start to 10 wins and two draws.
"It was one of those games, it had everything," said Solskjaer.
"My team did fantastic and the boys did great in the second half. The belief is there, they have gone so long without losing games (domestically) and are raring to go.
"They want to get on the ball and the confidence is high. They were class finishes from Romelu Lukaku and I am so pleased for Andreas Pereira."

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham have handed evidence to the police after completing an investigation into racist abuse shouted at Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah during their English Premier League match at the London Stadium on Monday (Feb 4).
A video emerged on social media in which audible racial slurs were directed at the 26-year-old Egypt international as he was taking a corner. The match finished in a 1-1 draw.
The user who posted the video on Twitter said: "I went to watch West Ham vs Liverpool and I was disgusted by what I was hearing. People like this deserve no place in our society let alone football matches."
The Metropolitan Police had told Reuters in an e-mail that officers were in the process of reviewing the footage and West Ham said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 7) that they had given all of their evidence to the police.
"After a thorough and immediate investigation following the abhorrent racist abuse aimed at Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah on Monday night, West Ham United can confirm that it has handed evidence to the Metropolitan Police," it said.
"The club is unequivocal in its stance - such abuse will not be tolerated. There is no place or excuse for this kind of behaviour."
Salah was last year named PFA Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year after he scored 44 goals for Liverpool in all competitions last season.

LONDON â€¢ For all of Manchester City's quality, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has said that his team can be considered as one of Europe's elite clubs only if they lift the elusive Champions League trophy.
City have won the Premier League three times since the Abu Dhabi United Group bought them in 2008, but have never gone past the semi-final stage of Europe's premier club competition.
"If you want to be in the international elite... you need to clinch this trophy," Gundogan told uefa.com ahead of today's last-16, first-leg clash at Schalke.
"I think that, if we were to win it some day, the club would enter a new era, the same level as Real (Madrid), Barcelona, Bayern (Munich) or Juventus, clubs that are maybe a step above us."
City were defeated in the last 16 three times in the previous five seasons while their only semi-final appearance came in 2016 when they were knocked out by Real 1-0 on aggregate.
"We've experienced a lot in the Champions League in recent years, not all of it positive, of course. We should've won it at least once," Gundogan added.
"The biggest low was probably being knocked out by Liverpool (in the quarter-finals) last season.
"For that reason, the motivation to go far in this competition is huge and I think we have the quality required."
As their Premier League title rivals Liverpool sunned themselves in Marbella last week, City were getting muddy in beating Newport 4-1 in the FA Cup last Saturday to stay on course for a historic clean sweep of four trophies.
City, top of the Premier League on goal difference, should cruise past a Schalke side languishing in 14th place in the German Bundesliga.
After the Schalke clash, City will bid to lift their first silverware of the season when they take on Chelsea in the League Cup final on Sunday.
"It's better to be in this situation," insisted manager Pep Guardiola at going for four trophies rather than concentrating playing resources towards Champions League and Premier League success.
"It's important in February to be here, in four competitions. Now we go to the biggest stage, the Champions League, and we will see (what happens) in May and June."
Rather than fearing the fatigue from fighting on four fronts, Guardiola is embracing the challenge and at least has the luxury of strength in depth to call on.
Leroy Sane, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez all scored against Newport to make their case for a Champions League start in Gelsenkirchen.
Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri's Juventus open their own last-16 tie at Atletico Madrid today as they continue their push for the European title which has eluded them for over two decades.
"We have to score at least one goal in Madrid, our qualification depends on this," warned the Italian.
"The two teams are evenly balanced."
