LONDON â€¢ Tottenham Hotspur believe they are on the brink of a piece of modern-day history and it has certainly been difficult to keep a lid on the excitement that is building ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Manchester City on Wednesday.
As such, yesterday's visit of an already relegated Huddersfield team felt like a distraction, an irritation even.
It added up to a test of Spurs' mentality, which Mauricio Pochettino has had cause to criticise on a few occasions this season, with the points still imperative to the club's top-four aspirations.
However, he could rest easy here. The 4-0 Premier League home victory was never in doubt from the moment Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama sashayed through Huddersfield's backline to grab the opener - his first of the season.
And the win which put Spurs third was glossed by a clinical hat-trick from Brazilian forward Lucas Moura - his first in a Spurs shirt.
Pochettino's decision to rest the majority of his regulars ahead of the City reverse fixture, with his side leading 1-0, was vindicated.

Post-match, Pochettino told the BBC he was "so pleased" that his squad players were able to rise to the occasion, claiming that "football is about the squad, the collective".
The Argentinian manager said: "Of course, we had some injuries after City like Alli and Kane and we were forced to make changes.
"We needed to provide fresh legs and it's good, because we have a tough period ahead and the performance was very professional."
Wanyama, who was delighted to have broken his duck for the term with "a special goal", also hailed his "fantastic" teammate Lucas for "helping the team whenever he gets chances".

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Southampton earned a crucial 2-1 win over Everton at St Mary's on Saturday (Jan 19) but had to endure a nervy finish as they boosted their battle against Premier League relegation under galvanising new manager Ralph Hasenhuettl.
James Ward-Prowse scored a superb individual goal just after the break before a Lucas Digne own goal looked to have comfortably sealed a deserved win for the Saints in the 64th minute.
Yet a goal at the start of stoppage time from Gylfi Sigurdsson gave the home fans a nervous finish as eight minutes were added on, much to Hasenhuettl's consternation, while Everton pushed for the equaliser.
The win pushed Southampton into 15th place on 22 points, three clear of the relegation zone, as they won only their second home match of the season - both coming under the stewardship of their impressive new Austrian boss.
"We played a fantastic game today, it could be four or five, fantastic football and defence. A great win for us," enthused Hasenhuettl, talking to the BBC.
"The strength you could feel it every second today. The guys really showed they are focused and committed and that is the key for the future."
Southampton merited the win after dominating the first half and twice striking the woodwork - first, as Nathan Redmond hit the post and then as Andre Gomes hit his own side's upright while trying to defend another attack from Danny Ings.
Saints got the reward for their enterprise when Ward-Prowse was given too much freedom to maraud towards the Everton goal and smashed a 50th-minute shot past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The hapless Digne then toe-poked the ball past Pickford while desperately trying to quell an attack from the ever-dangerous Redmond in the 64th minute before Everton's late attacks came to nothing.
Southampton have now taken 13 points in eight games since 51-year-old Hasenhuettl arrived at St Mary's in December - four more than they had managed in their preceding 15 matches.
"When you lose like we lost this afternoon, we are not happy, we didn't perform well and they deserved three points," said Everton manager Marco Silva.
"Southampton are giving everything to get out of the danger zone so it is important we give the same," added the Portuguese, whose side lie 11th in the table.

MADRID â€¢ There was little sign of Barcelona's swashbuckling attacking play in their 1-0 LaLiga win at Real Madrid on Saturday as the team renowned for goalscoring produced a rare masterclass in defending, led by Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique.
Ivan Rakitic scored the decisive goal in a cagey Clasico that lacked the drama associated with the fixture, sending the table-toppers 12 points clear of third-placed Real.
The victory, coming hot on the heels of last week's 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the second leg of their King's Cup semi-final, was mostly down to the steeliness of their central defensive pair, who blocked seven shots between them, forming a human shield in front of goal.
"Every time Madrid attacked us, Pique or Lenglet cleared the danger, I had very little work to do because of them," said Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
"We fought and suffered in the last half-hour, (but) we defended as a team. You always suffer a bit at the Bernabeu, but we know we have a great team and we fought hard for the victory.
"The last few years have been very good here, we've had a lot of success here and I hope it stays that way."
Rakitic added: "We worked very hard for this victory and we deserve it. Sometimes, you have to fight, you have to stick your leg in and we are very happy."
Pique led jubilant celebrations in the middle of the pitch after the full-time whistle, but later warned that the league title was not in the bag despite "having made a real statement".
The former Spain international told reporters: "We knew how to suffer. We weren't celebrating the league title because Atletico (Madrid) are still there.
"It's been a perfect week and we should celebrate it, but we haven't won the league yet, not at all, it's not definitive."
However, his manager Ernesto Valverde all but wrote off Real's title ambitions after Barcelona overtook them in their head-to-head record for the first time in 87 years, with 96 victories to 95.
The Spaniard claimed his side had "delivered our best and inflicted damage on our rival".
Real No. 1 Thibaut Courtois also conceded they "lacked accuracy" in the two games against the Spanish champions.
The Belgium goalkeeper said: "To win games, you need to score goals and we didn't do that. We couldn't play the final pass and they saved themselves a couple of times, the ball just didn't want to go in."
His coach Santiago Solari was equally despondent after Real slumped to their third straight home loss for the first time since 2004, admitting "sometimes, everything doesn't go for you".
And former Real manager Jose Mourinho predicted things would get worse for the European champions as they "are (now) on a low".
He told beIN Sports: "It was not a happy performance. It was not the performance of a happy team. It was not the performance of a team with great belief and self-esteem.
"It's just a soft performance... against the top teams, you have to do much more than this if you want to win."

His winner on Saturday was his fourth in three games after bagging a brace last week and scoring in Atletico's 3-0 hammering of Alaves a fortnight ago.
"Antoine is an excellent goalscorer," added Godin.
"He works for the team brilliantly and helps with his his goals."

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Japan captain Maya Yoshida says his side must learn from their painful Asian Cup final defeat and use the experience to make a breakthrough at the next World Cup by getting beyond the last 16 for the first time.
Japan had been looking for a fifth Asian title but were stunned 3-1 in the final by Qatar in the United Arab Emirates on Friday (Feb 1).
Invited to take part in the Copa America in June and July, and with their qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup set to begin in September, there is little time for Japan to reflect on their disappointment.
"Our first target is, of course, to qualify for the World Cup, and then get over the wall at which we were stopped last time, the round of 16. That is an objective for Japanese football," Yoshida said after the final.
"In order to do that, we have the Copa America coming up and then in the autumn the World Cup qualifiers, and we have to make sure we learn from this defeat.
"We have to capitalise upon this experience looking ahead to what comes next. Of course I'm disappointed, but we have to look forward."
Yoshida said he felt a sense of responsibility for the surprise defeat by Qatar, who will host the World Cup in 2022.
"For the first and second goals, we conceded from a player right in front of me, and I really feel a big sense of regret that I wasn't able to lead the team to the title," he added.
Both Japan and Qatar will compete in Brazil as invitees when the Copa America starts on June 14.
Japan is also building towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with coach Hajime Moriyasu saying in the past he was aiming to match or better Japan's bronze medal achieved in 1968.
Despite originally considering sending an Under-23 squad to Brazil in preparation for the Olympics, the Japanese Football Association announced in December it would be sending a full-strength squad.
Japan's next fixture is a friendly against Colombia on March 22.
