Football: Singapore Under-22s seal Merlion Cup final spot after 3-0 win over the Philippines

SINGAPORE - Fandi Ahmad was a proud coach and father after watching his Singapore Under-22 side deliver a composed 3-0 Merlion Cup win over the Philippines on Friday (June 7) with his two sons among the goalscorers.
The semi-final victory sends the Young Lions into Sunday's final against Thailand, who beat Indonesia 2-1 in the earlier match at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Given striker Ikhsan Fandi, 20, had arrived from Norway on Tuesday and was jet-lagged, it was no surprise that national U-22 coach Fandi opted to leave his younger son on the bench.
Despite the absence of Ikhsan, who has netted four goals in 11 games for Norwegian second-tier club Raufoss this season, the Republic took the lead in the first half through his replacement Amiruldin Asraf.
The Home United forward stole possession from Philippines defender Pete Forrosuelo in the penalty area and easily scored past goalkeeper Michael Asong in the 26th minute.
The host looked threatening on set-pieces and Singapore captain Irfan Fandi, 21, was an obvious danger thanks to his 1.88m frame during corners and free-kicks.
The centre-back almost scored in the 40th minute but his downward header hit the upright.
Fandi's eldest son made no mistake though in the 61st minute and guided his header past Asong to double Singapore's lead.
Six minutes later, Ikhsan, a half-time substitute, completed a swift counter-attack with a simple tap in after a cross from the right by midfielder Daniel Goh.

Four fans get stadium ban

LONDON • Chelsea have temporarily suspended four fans from attending their matches while they carry out an investigation into allegations Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling was racially abused during Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.
TV cameras caught a home supporter hurling vitriol at the 24-year-old during the 2-0 win and the club have since said they will not hesitate to ban anyone.
That man has been identified by The Daily Mail as Colin Wing, who has denied using a racist slur.
"I'm deeply ashamed by my own behaviour and I feel really bad. I offer him an unreserved apology. Even if it wasn't racist, it's not right what I said," the 60-year-old told the paper, adding he has since lost his job and his season ticket.
The paper revealed that while Wing has been spoken to by police, no arrests have yet been made nor have charges been filed.
Chelsea said in a statement on Monday that their investigation is ongoing and they will fully support the police in the case.
They added: "Chelsea finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour abhorrent and, if there is evidence of ticket holders taking part in any racist behaviour, the club will issue severe sanctions, including bans.
"We will fully support any criminal prosecutions."

The club are tracking down all the video and audio coverage of the incident and are interviewing stewards while broadcaster BT Sport has forwarded its footage to the police. Chelsea are also employing lip readers to establish what was said.
Defending champions City welcomed the swift action, saying: "The club and Raheem are fully engaged with Chelsea and the investigating authorities as they continue to examine the events in question.
"Manchester City and Raheem are committed to working with all relevant parties and organisations to support the objective of eradicating racism from the game."
The incident has provoked widespread condemnation amid fears football is returning to the dark ages of racism that blighted the sport in the 1970s and 1980s.
Former England assistant coach Gary Neville claimed this was just one of many cases of "vicious abuse" Sterling has had to suffer down the years.
He told Sky Sports: "It's not undertones, it's blatant.
"This isn't just a Chelsea fan at the weekend, this has been going on for years for him. He came to see me in 2016. Was it happening to him before that?"
The Professional Footballers' Association also called for clubs to take strong action to tackle racism in a statement that read: "The PFA condemns, in the strongest terms, the increase in racial abuse our members have been receiving from the terraces.
"We encourage clubs to take the strongest possible action for fans found guilty of racially abusing players.
"It is not acceptable for our members to find themselves subject to racist abuse, simply for showing up to work and performing for their team."

Arsenal's top-four hopes suffer another blow

Arsenal's top-four hopes suffer another blow

LONDON • First Crystal Palace, then Wolves, and now Leicester.
Three defeats in the space of eight days, and at arguably the worst time of the season, means that Arsenal's hopes of a top-four finish are unravelling.
The frustration was written all over Unai Emery's face on an afternoon when nothing went right for the Gunners against a resurgent Leicester side, which ran out 3-0 winners yesterday.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off after 36 minutes for two bookable offences and there was only going to be one winner thereafter.
A meek and brittle Arsenal side were outplayed and outfought, with the only surprise being that it took Leicester until the 59th minute to open the scoring.
Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans, who has been so impressive since joining on loan from Monaco, headed Leicester in front and there are no prizes for guessing who got the second and third goals.
Jamie Vardy continued his outstanding form since Brendan Rodgers took over as manager in February and his remarkable record against Arsenal, the club he turned down the chance to join in the summer of 2016.
The former England striker has now scored eight goals in his last seven matches against Emery's men, with his brace at the King Power Stadium taking his Premier League tally for the term to 18.
By the end, it all felt rather humiliating for Arsenal, who have now lost three successive league games for the first time in 13 months and, more alarmingly, conceded three goals in each of them.
The last time that happened in the top flight was in 1967 but, post-game, Emery blasted referee Michael Oliver's decision to send off Maitland-Niles, insisting his first card was "not a yellow for me".
Pinning the defeat, the eighth time they have lost on the road this league campaign, on going down to 10 men, the Spaniard told BBC Sport: "It has affected our game plan a lot. One player less is difficult. Today, the condition is the red card.
"We will continue, we will not look at the table, the Europa League is a big motivation for us to win it."
His first booking, for bringing down defender Ben Chilwell inside the opening 10 minutes, may have seemed a little soft, although it was a deliberate foul.
And the full-back was running a huge risk from the moment he made the late challenge on midfielder James Maddison which brought about the second yellow card.
But Arsenal had struggled to get going even with 11 men on the pitch, with Leicester controlling the game and looking much more threatening, and the breakthrough inevitably came after the interval.

After four wins, Solskjaer reluctant to leave United post

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows a thing or two about impact substitutions, but even Manchester United's former supersub extraordinaire must have been pleasantly surprised to see Romelu Lukaku step off the bench and score within 38 seconds on Wednesday.
Until then, Solskjaer had seemed outwitted by Rafael Benitez's contain-and-counter tactics. But, by the end of a bitterly cold night, Marcus Rashford had added a second to seal a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
It makes the Norwegian the first United manager since Matt Busby in 1946 to win his opening four games. He acknowledged it would be "hard" for him to relinquish the role and return to his "day job" at Molde in Norway in May.
"Of course I won't want to leave," the 45-year-old said, semi-teasingly. "I don't want to."
His smile suggested he knows he will almost certainly have to, although much more of this and all bets will be off.
If United's flight to the warmth of Dubai tomorrow for a mid-season training break should be a happy one, Newcastle remain far too close to the relegation zone for comfort.
Things certainly appeared to have changed since the last time Solskjaer patrolled the away technical area at the St James' Park in 2014.

  • 1946

  • The only other year a Manchester United manager in Matt Busby won his first four league games, a feat matched by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Back then, Alan Pardew was in charge of a home team whose 3-0 win confirmed Cardiff's relegation from the Premier League.
Not that Jose Mourinho's interim successor could afford to relax, even with a new-found sense of creative liberation, that was cowed and cramped by his predecessor, leading to 12 goals before the game.
Indeed, United could easily have conceded early when Phil Jones' poor back pass played Salomon Rondon onside. In the end, the defender recovered superbly to rescue the situation.
"Finally we kept a clean sheet," Solskjaer told Sky Sports. "A very professional performance. We didn't hit the heights that we can do, but we were in control, kept plugging away and got the goals."
At the other end, Paul Pogba, the chief beneficiary of the regime change with four goals and three assists, regularly advanced down the inside-left channel with destructive intent but the final ball was not quite coming off against the hosts' five-man defence.
Yet this was also very much a collective effort, a masterclass in the art of assiduous closing down. With less than half an hour left, the time had come to liberate Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez from the bench.
Lukaku scored with his first touch when Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka uncharacteristically spilled Rashford's dipping 25m free kick. The forward reacted with alacrity, responding faster than Jamaal Lascelles to drive the rebound home from six yards.
Said Solskjaer: "A good first touch from a sub. When you see big Romelu Lukaku running towards you, as a 'keeper you might take your hands away."
All that remained was for an unmarked Rashford to slide a shot through Dubravka's legs at the end of a move he had started. It involved Lukaku cueing up Sanchez, who marked his return from hamstring trouble with an assist that rekindled hopes of a top-four spot.
"Marcus has a great hit," said Solskjaer. "He must have been watching Cristiano (Ronaldo) practising. Without hitting the heights, it was a very professional performance."

We could have beaten Moldova by more: Deschamps

We could have beaten Moldova by more: Deschamps

CHISINAU • France coach Didier Deschamps believes that his world champions could have inflicted a heavier defeat on Moldova, despite a convincing 4-1 victory to kick off their opening Euro 2020 qualifying campaign on Friday.
Antoine Griezmann scored one and set up another as World Cup winners France easily beat Moldova in Chisinau in the Group H match.
The Atletico Madrid attacker opened the scoring in the 24th minute before crossing for Raphael Varane to double the advantage three minutes later.
Olivier Giroud then equalled David Trezeguet as Les Bleus' third-highest scorer of all time with his 34th international goal nine minutes before the break.
Kylian Mbappe completed the rout with three minutes left, before Vladimir Ambros claimed a late consolation for Moldova.
"We could have scored more," said Deschamps. "But these matches are still complicated.
"My players handled the game the right way. We did not fall into any trap.
"The goal conceded does not take anything from our good game. It was a potentially tricky match but we did what we had to.
"We did not give Moldova time to organise and to get back, and we have to keep it that way."
Left-back Layvin Kurzawa was the only member of the starting line-up without a World Cup medal.
Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman pulled out during the warm-up with a muscle issue and was replaced by Blaise Matuidi.
"We've opened our campaign well and the second game comes around quickly," Deschamps added ahead of facing Iceland at the Stade de France tomorrow. "In three days we have do it again."
Meanwhile, European champions Portugal were held to a 0-0 draw in Lisbon by Ukraine in their opening qualifier as talisman Cristiano Ronaldo returned for the first time since the World Cup.
Ukraine's veteran goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov kept Portugal at bay with several fine saves in the first hour, before the hosts ran out of ideas in the Group B game.
"The team had some good moments and some difficult moments," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, whose side have a tough match at home to Serbia tomorrow.
"We failed to take three or four chances in the first half.
"Now we have to unwind and think about Serbia.
"It's a bit of a blow to our morale but the players will get over it."
